Confidence and Christianity

“All we need is confidence.”

“Believe in yourself.”

“Confidence is the most important thing you can possess.”

You hear it all the time.

But it got me thinking…. What is Biblical confidence? And should a Christian even be confident? If so, to what extent?

After giving it some thought and research, I have come to the conclusion that Christians should be super confident — only, not in themselves. In God!

“I am confident. Not because of who I am, but because of whose I am.” — Ben Courson

As Christians we can (and should) be SUPER confidant! But we need to be careful to place our confidence in the right place — God!

The Bible says to trust in one’s own mind is foolish (Proverbs 28:26). To trust in princes is foolish. (Psalm 118:8) The one who trusts in riches will fall. (Proverbs 11:28)Β These are places we should place our confidence!

However, the One we can have confidence in is Jesus!Β

Because we know that He is good and fully capable to take care of everything that’s going on!

Confidence: Depending completely upon God to handle the things in your life. Definition from My 1 Comfort.com.

But how does this translate to our lives?

That question is a much harder one to answer. And I’m not claiming to have all the answers here. To be honest, I’m writing this because I am studying what Biblical confidence is and how to live confidently in Christ! I’m just letting you eavesdrop on my thoughts. πŸ˜‰

All that to say, if you see things from a different perspective, please share it. I’d love to hear it!

One thing I do think is quite clear, though, is that avoiding confidence in yourself does not mean that you walk around with your head down, bashing yourself and all you do. I think quite the opposite is true.

I guess what I am trying to say can be summed up by this statement by Compelling Truth. It doesn’t mean that you can’t have self-confidence or self-respect. “The issue is the source of this confidence.”

Here are three things I think lively confidently in Christ means. Again, if you see any other ways that would impact our lives, please share! πŸ™‚

  1. We can confidently do what He calls us to.
Philippians 4:13

Through Jesus, we have all the resources we need to do what He calls us to do!

2. We can be confident that’s its going to be okay.

Romans 8:28

No matter what’s going on, if we’re confident in Jesus, we can also be confident that it’s going to be okay. Actually, not okay. Good. Great. Wonderful. Marvelous. Amazing. Epic. Spectacular. You get the point. πŸ˜‰

3. We shouldn’t be confident in ourselves.

Since we know Who we serve — Jesus — it would seem ridiculous to depend on ourselves in any way. After all, if we have any gifts or successes or abilities, it’s because God has given us that gift. (James 1:17)

So Biblical confidence? Yes! It’s trusting God completely to handle anything that’s going on in your life! Confidence in God!

So, Princess, go out and live a confident life, knowing that God is fully capable of handling everything in your life! πŸ’•

I hope you have a wonderful day! 😊

Love in Christ, Noelle Rose

  1. I love this post, Noelle! It annoys me so much when people say “believe in yourself”, especially Christian people. Where is that found in the Bible, people!?
