Overcoming Doubt

Hi princess!

I have a quick question for you. Who is God? I’m sure you can come up with a pretty nice list:

He is a loving Father.

A Perfect Friend.

He’s merciful, just, a refuge, patient, and forgiving.

Another question, did those answers come from your head or your heart?

Sometimes those answers are easy to say but not so easy to feel, to know in your heart. I say this from experience. Sometimes God manifests Himself to you so clearly that His presence is just as obvious as the fact that you’re sitting in front of a computer right now. But other times, He seems kind of distant.

I know because I’ve felt both — recently. So I thought I’d share some of the things that help me to feel closer to Him. (I was actually having a hard time decided whether or not I’d write this but… I obviously did… so I hope that what helps me in those times, will help you too!)

So, what about those times when He doesn’t feel so close?

Well, first, understand that that happens to a lot of most Christians. Remember that He doesn’t change. You don’t feel this way because He has changed, or even changed His mind about you. Finally, recognize that this could be a test. At times God tests our faith and trust in Him, which makes it especially important to talk to Him; sit at His Feet, listening to Him; study His Word.

Second, revel in His Word. Read who He says He is. Write down His attributes as you come across them. Take time to reflect on what He has done for you.

Be thankful! If you have a thankful attitude towards your God, who has given you literally EVERYTHING and withholds nothing from you (Romans 8:32), then how could you possibly NOT feel that God is who He says He is! That He truly is a loving Father, perfect Friend, a merciful Savior, and a Refuge in times of trouble.

Finally, princess, if you are having trouble seeing God as He is — and as you know He is — then take it to the Lord. There’s nothing wrong with having doubts. It’s totally normal. We all do. Even John the Baptist, who baptized Jesus, saw the Holy Spirit descend on Him like a dove, and heard God say ‘this is My Son in whom I am well-pleased’, doubted when he was in prison. But he did what we all should do, he sent a messenger to Jesus carrying his doubts. Princess, when you are doubting, take those doubts to Jesus. He will refresh you, just as He did for John the Baptist.

My friend, sometimes there are days when you simply don’t feel God the way you often do. That’s a frustrating time, to be sure. But when that’s the case, it’s not because God has abandoned you. It’s not because He’s changed His mind about you. “He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

In those times, don’t forget what He’s done for you. Search out the Scriptures. Reflect on who He says He is. Be thankful! But most of all, remember to take it to the Lord.

Remember, He is: A loving Father. Merciful Savior. Perfect Friend. A Strong Refuge. An Ever-Present Help. A Comforter. Our God.

I hope that this was an encouragement to you and a help to you! What helps you in the times when God seems kind of distant? Make sure to post what helps you in the comments. ๐Ÿ˜

Have a wonderful day, my friend!
